Skin Care Recipes
by Kelly Colby-Nunez
It is sometimes sad for me to see that the beauty industry has become so dependant on product lines. This sets a mindset that natural is tame or does not produce results fast enough, this is completely wrong! I do sell products, Cosmedix and Actifirm, in my practice. However what I use in my treatment room is a fusion of herbs, enzymes, botanicals, etc. I completely believe in the product lines I sell, but my heart and passion is with indigenous traditions for skin care. For most people, mixing their own recipes is not practical, so for these people, I use Cosmedix and Actifim. For the people that love to create, you can't beat nature! You never ever have the same skin care treatment twice in my practice. Because your skin is ever changing, it's needs will change as well. The fusion and flexibility of nature allows customized treatments with every visit.
Most of my recipes will be available on our AY Wellness blog, but there will be a few posted here to help the cross-over between our blog and the AY Wellness website.
Natural remedies are often better for skin lightening than hydroquinone or herbal lightening alternatives. The key is consistency. You must use it if you want it to work.
I must caution, these recipes and techniques can be very active. Treat these recipes as you would anything else. Use common sense and if you feel uncomfortable at any time, do not use the recipe. If you are allergic to one of the ingredients, skip the recipe or create your own. Also, anything you mix up fresh has a shelf life or should I say refrigerator life. Usually this ranges from 4 days to 1 week so make small amount.
Use organic when possible. If organic is not feasible, peel your fruit and vegetables and soak in a couple of capfuls of hydrogen peroxide and some pure water for a few minutes before using.
Also store your recipes in glass jars or baby food jars. Plastic will leach into your recipes causing unwanted toxins.
Cleanse face first. Click here for cleansing the professional way. Always use these recipes on clean dry skin. Skin should be washed morning and evening to remove environmental toxins and to assist your skin in detoxification. This is an important step many people forget.

Natural Recipes for you to make at home.
Skin Lightening
2 Ripe Strawberries
1 very small tomato or 2 larger cherub tomatoes
2 TBS Lemon Juice or Lime Juice.
1/2 teas powdered vit C (ascorbic acid)
1-2 TBS Kefir
I mix mine up in a coffee bean grinder because it is such a small amount and this blends it well. You can use a blender but strain it before using.
Apply a thin layer and you can leave on anywhere from 15 minutes to over night. It is amazing at clearing and softening your skin.
For Acne
Add in 2-3 TBS Pascalite clay to the recipe above. Mix well. This should then have a whipped cream type of consistency. The reason I use Pascalite clay over any other is that it seems to be the cross-over between bentonite clay, which can be harsh to the skin, and some of the beauty clays like the green or red clays. Pascalite is used to heal everything in our family. This recipe is great for light to moderate teen acne or adult acne. Make sure you re wet the masque before you are ready to remove it, otherwise you could pull some skin off with the masque!
Toner
1 Strawberry blended into
1/4 cup Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar.
Blend well and apply with medical gauze. Use medium pressure when applying this to your skin. This treatment will cause your skin to become red. This is a good thing as it is bring oxygen to the cells and tissues of your skin. Your skin may stay red for 20 minutes after this toner is applied and that is normal. You can leave on the skin or rinse off after 10-20 minutes. The smell does quickly go away on its own.
Anti-Aging Masque or Anti-Acne Masque
4 TBS Indian Healing Clay
4 TBS Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
Mix well. This should have a toothpaste consistence and should be very whippy and light looking. Spread on a thin amount and leave on 10 minutes to over night. Start out with 10 minutes and slowly work your way up to longer. This can also be used to spot treat acne bumps. The best is to put this on when you first feel it coming on.
This masque will dry and become itchy and tight. Make sure you re wet the masque completely with water before using a washcloth the gently rub the masque off your skin. Follow with a few splashes of icy cool water. For anti-aging, you can use this recipe 1x a week. For slight to moderate acne, you can use this 1-2x a week. For heavy acne, use this 3x a week, but make sure it does not dry out your skin. This will also help reduce blackheads and is great for rosacea.
